Delta-8-THC

Delta-8 THC is a cannabinoid that occurs only in tiny amounts naturally, so commercial delta-8 is generally synthesized from hemp-derived CBD. It is intoxicating like regular delta-9 THC but is commonly described as somewhat milder. It surged in popularity after 2018 as a 'legal' hemp-derived alternative to marijuana, sold in gummies, vapes, and other products, often in places where marijuana itself is illegal.

Delta-8 THC binds to the CB1 cannabinoid receptor in the brain, the same receptor responsible for the delta-9 THC high, which is why it is intoxicating. It is generally reported to bind somewhat less strongly, consistent with a milder effect. Because commercial delta-8 is chemically converted from CBD, finished products can also contain reaction by-products and residual chemicals from that process.

Effects resemble a milder delta-9 THC high: relaxation, euphoria, altered perception, and increased appetite, along with dry mouth, red eyes, and impaired coordination. Higher doses — easy to reach with concentrated edibles — can cause anxiety, paranoia, rapid heart rate, and, especially in edible form, severe over-intoxication. Onset and duration vary by product and route.

Delta-8's risks come from both the drug and how it is made. Like delta-9 THC it can cause anxiety, paranoia, rapid heart rate, impaired coordination, and, at the high doses reachable with edibles, severe over-intoxication requiring medical attention — a particular danger for children, who have been hospitalized after eating delta-8 products packaged to look like ordinary candy or snacks. Because most delta-8 is chemically synthesized from CBD in poorly regulated facilities, products frequently contain unknown reaction by-products, residual solvents and reagents, heavy metals, or unlabeled amounts of delta-9 THC, and independent testing repeatedly finds mislabeled potency. The FDA has warned about adverse-event reports and accidental pediatric exposures. It is not a benign 'legal weed'; content and purity cannot be assumed.
