3-MMC

2-(methylamino)-1-(3-methylphenyl)propan-1-one

3-MMC (metaphedrone) is a synthetic cathinone stimulant closely related to mephedrone, which it largely replaced after mephedrone was banned. It acts on dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, produces short-acting stimulant and mild empathogenic effects, and carries a high risk of compulsive redosing and dependence.

Overview

3-MMC (3-methylmethcathinone, also called metaphedrone) is a synthetic cathinone stimulant and a close chemical relative of mephedrone (4-MMC), differing only in the position of one methyl group on the molecule. It emerged on the European drug market around 2012, largely as a replacement for mephedrone after that drug was banned, and its use grew in the following years. It is usually found as a powder or in tablets, capsules, or occasionally liquids, and is typically swallowed or snorted; it is also used in "chemsex" settings, sometimes by injection. It has been assessed at the European level and brought under control across the EU.

Chemistry & mechanism of action

Like its relative mephedrone, 3-MMC acts on the brain's monoamine systems: laboratory studies indicate it inhibits the reuptake of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, raising their levels in the brain. Its overall profile is described as more amphetamine-like than MDMA-like — that is, weighted toward dopamine-driven stimulation more than serotonin-driven empathy — which, combined with its short duration of action, helps explain the strong drive to redose that users and regulators have flagged. A first-in-human study of low-to-moderate doses (25-100 mg) found dose-dependent rises in heart rate and blood pressure and a subjective "high," consistent with a stimulant structurally related to amphetamine.

Effects

3-MMC produces stimulant effects — increased energy, alertness, euphoria, talkativeness, and sociability — along with mild feelings of closeness, giving it a milder empathogenic edge on top of a mainly amphetamine-like profile. Onset is fairly rapid and the effects are short-lived, which strongly encourages repeated dosing within a session. Common unwanted effects include raised heart rate and blood pressure, jaw clenching, restlessness, reduced appetite, and difficulty sleeping.

Risks & harms

The clearest risks with 3-MMC are compulsive redosing and dependence: its short duration and strong dopamine action drive bingeing, which regulators specifically flagged as a concern. The European risk assessment reviewed cases of acute poisoning, several of them life-threatening, and its acute toxicity and abuse potential are considered comparable to other controlled synthetic cathinones. Heavy use is associated with anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis. Most reported deaths involved 3-MMC together with other drugs. Use in chemsex or "slamsex" settings adds further risks: overdose via injection, injection-site infections, and increased exposure to blood-borne viruses such as HIV and hepatitis C. As with other cathinone powders, contents and strength vary between samples.

If it’s too intense

If an experience becomes overwhelming, the goal is to stay safe and let it pass — most difficult experiences ease as the drug wears off.

  • Get to a calm, safe space with someone you trust who is sober and can stay with you.
  • Cool down if you’re overheating — move somewhere cool, remove extra layers, rest. Overheating is especially a risk with stimulants and MDMA.
  • Sip water to thirst — but don’t over-hydrate. Drinking large amounts of plain water (especially after MDMA) can dangerously dilute your blood sodium (hyponatremia). Electrolytes help more than volume.
  • Slow your breathing — long, slow exhales help settle a racing heart and anxiety.
  • A sugary drink, fruit juice, or a snack can ease shakiness and the anxiety that comes with low blood sugar.
  • Do not take more, and do not add another substance to manage it. Redosing or adding something else (including a sedative like a benzodiazepine) can make things worse, not better.

After MDMA, overheating and over-hydration are both dangerous: cool down, and sip to thirst rather than gulping water (forcing plain water can drop your blood sodium dangerously).

Effects, risks & interactions

Effects
3-MMC is a synthetic cathinone very close to mephedrone (4-MMC) — a positional isomer of it — which came to prominence as a "successor" after mephedrone was banned in many countries. Its effects are broadly similar: a stimulant-empathogen mixture of euphoria, energy, sociability and warmth, with the same brief, redose-prompting profile. It is a later-wave "research chemical" that filled the gap left by earlier prohibitions.NIDA Synthetic Cathinones (Bath Salts) + PubChem CID 71741532 · retrieved 2026-06-18
Risks
3-MMC brings the cathinone-class dangers: brief effects that prompt compulsive redosing, stacking a heavy sympathomimetic burden — elevated pulse and blood pressure, chest pain, overheating — and, through serotonin release, a risk of serotonin toxicity when taken with other serotonergic drugs. Anxiety, agitation and sleeplessness are common with heavier use. Because this is a substance that exists precisely to stay one step ahead of drug laws, it is produced with no quality control and shifting composition, so its strength and identity are unknown to whoever buys it — the central harm-reduction risk.NIDA Synthetic Cathinones (Bath Salts) + PubChem CID 71741532 · retrieved 2026-06-18
