Is Ephedrine legal in Germany?
- Legal status
- Regulated as a chemical PRECURSOR (1988 UN Convention Table I — a methamphetamine precursor), NOT as a scheduled narcotic; pure ephedrine is a Category 1 scheduled substance under the Grundstoffüberwachungsgesetz (GÜG). Also a prescription-only medicine. NOT a BtMG narcotic.
- Consequences if caught
- Unlicensed handling/diversion of a Category-1 precursor is punishable under GÜG §19 (up to 5 years) — a precursor offence distinct from BtMG drug-trafficking.
- If prescribed or medical
- Also a pharmacy/prescription decongestant-bronchodilator medicine subject to sales limits; carry documentation for a personal supply.
- Documentation
- EU/Schengen travel: carry prescribed narcotics for up to 30 days with an Article 75 Schengen certificate — completed by your doctor and authenticated by the competent Land health authority (one certificate per drug). From outside Schengen: carry a multilingual doctor's certificate authenticated by your home-country health authority. Ordinary (non-narcotic) medicines: up to a 3-month personal supply.
