Legality · Pregabalin

Is Pregabalin legal in Ireland?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Pregabalin is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in Ireland and — unlike the neighbouring UK — has NOT been placed in the controlled-drug schedules of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations, so ordinary prescription rules apply despite documented misuse and repeated calls for reclassification.
Consequences if caught
Supply without authorisation is a medicines offence; there is no controlled-drug possession offence for pregabalin because it sits outside the Misuse of Drugs schedules.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed and dispensed as an ordinary prescription-only medicine.
Documentation
Ireland is outside Schengen — carry a personal supply with the original prescription in original packaging; standard POM rules apply.
