Is Gabapentin legal in Ireland?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Gabapentin is an authorised prescription-only medicine, not a controlled drug: Neurontin and gabapentin generics hold HPRA marketing authorisations (supply category: prescription which may be renewed) and gabapentin is not scheduled under the Misuse of Drugs Acts. Ireland diverges from the neighbouring UK, which controlled gabapentin as Class C in 2019 while Ireland did not.
Consequences if caught
Gabapentin carries no Misuse of Drugs penalty; supplying this prescription medicine without authorisation is a medicines-law offence rather than a drug-trafficking offence.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed for epilepsy and neuropathic pain on an ordinary prescription (renewable), with no controlled-drug prescribing formalities.
Documentation
Gabapentin/Neurontin products are listed on the HPRA register of authorised human medicines; travellers carry them lawfully with a prescription.
