Is Pregabalin legal in Germany?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Pregabalin is a prescription-only medicine (verschreibungspflichtig) under the AMG/AMVV and is deliberately NOT listed in the Narcotics Act (BtMG) annexes — an ordinary prescription applies, the same non-scheduled status as gabapentin in Germany, despite EU-level abuse surveillance.
Consequences if caught
Supplying or possessing pregabalin without a valid prescription is a medicines-law offence (AMG); it is not prosecuted under the stricter BtMG narcotics penalties.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed on an ordinary prescription as a non-scheduled gabapentinoid.
Documentation
As it is not a BtM, no narcotics travel certificate is legally required; carry a personal supply with the original prescription and, ideally, a doctor's letter.
