Is Cathinone legal in Germany?

- Controlled — cathinone (khat's natural principal alkaloid) is a 1971 Convention SCHEDULE I psychotropic and is individually placed in Anlage I (non-marketable narcotic) of the Betäubungsmittelgesetz. Mechanism: 1971 Sch-I transposition, named. As the parent compound it is DISTINCT from the khat PLANT (the leaf is not listed by name and is caught only because it contains Sch-I cathinone) and from the synthetic cathinones (mephedrone in Anlage I, others under the NpSG 2016) that derive from it; cathinone is the named Anlage-I alkaloid, while cathine sits in the lesser Anlage III (1971 Schedule III).
- Consequences if caught
- Anlage I: §29 BtMG unauthorised possession of the isolated alkaloid up to 5 years, trafficking/large-quantity offences higher. No death penalty in Germany.
- If prescribed or medical
- Anlage I (nicht verkehrsfähig) — no accepted medical use and no lawful prescription route for the pure alkaloid.
- Documentation
- No lawful personal-import route for an Anlage I narcotic; no medical carry exemption for cathinone.
