Is MXE legal in Germany?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
MXE (methoxetamin) is listed by name in Anlage I of the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BtMG) — the schedule of non-marketable narcotics — controlled since 2013 as an arylcyclohexylamine dissociative; it is not a tradeable or prescribable medicine (contrast: ketamine, which is a prescription medicine outside the BtMG schedules).
Consequences if caught
Handling an Anlage I substance such as MXE is a criminal offence under §29 BtMG; possession, acquisition, trafficking and import are punishable, with trafficking exposing offenders to multi-year custodial sentences.
If prescribed or medical
As an Anlage I narcotic, MXE cannot lawfully be prescribed or dispensed and has no authorised medicinal product in Germany; permits are granted only exceptionally for scientific research.
Documentation
No pharmacy or medical channel exists; MXE bought online arrives as an illicit research chemical and is liable to customs seizure, with no traveller carve-out.
