Methadone is a Schedule 2 controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 — full narcotic control, dispensed under the national Methadone Treatment Protocol and central Treatment List.
Consequences if caught
Unauthorised possession is an offence (up to 7 years on indictment); supply carries far higher penalties (up to life).
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed for OST via specialist clinics and Level 1/2 GPs (supervised, then take-home).
Documentation
Ireland is outside the Schengen carry scheme — carry a multilingual doctor's/INCB certificate; confirm with the HPRA before travel.
