Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Buprenorphine is a Schedule 3 controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2017 — a lighter tier than Schedule 2 methadone.
Consequences if caught
Unlawful possession is an offence; supply or trafficking carries far higher penalties.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed for opioid substitution (buprenorphine/naloxone) via specialist clinics and Level 1/2 GPs — supervised, then take-home.
Documentation
Ireland is outside the Schengen certificate scheme for this purpose — carry a multilingual doctor's certificate and prescription (HPRA guidance) for personal supply in original packaging.
