Is Methadone legal in Jordan?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified August 25, 2026
Legal status
Controlled narcotic. Methadone is a 1961 Single Convention Schedule I opioid and Jordan furnishes annual estimates to INCB under it. The domestic statute is the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 23 of 2016; no Jordanian host serving that text responded during this pass.
Consequences if caught
NOT CONFIRMED from a primary source. The life-not-death description previously carried here rested on an NGO overview rather than Law No. 23 of 2016. Jordan's legislation bureau (gbd.gov.jo), Food and Drug Administration (jfda.jo) and Ministry of Health (moh.gov.jo) were all unreachable during this pass.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed for opioid substitution treatment as a controlled narcotic, and the figure supports it: Jordan's 2026 INCB estimated requirement for methadone is 1,600 g, four times Kuwait's 400 g. Substitution treatment is an established part of Jordanian practice.
Documentation
Prior approval is required to import narcotic medicines. Carry prescription documentation.
