Is Codeine legal in Jordan?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified August 24, 2026
Legal status
Codeine is a controlled narcotic, medically dispensed, under Jordan's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 23 of 2016; it is non-capital. Ordinary opioid trafficking draws life imprisonment rather than death, with capital reserved narrowly for collaborating with international trafficking gangs.
Consequences if caught
Trafficking can draw up to life; simple possession is lower - codeine is not death-eligible by class.
If prescribed or medical
Available as medicine: Jordan's INCB estimated requirement for codeine for 2026 is 60,000 g (morphine 85,000 g). Jordan has furnished INCB a traveller-regulation sheet dated 2025, but that document is a scanned image with no text layer and its terms could not be read here — confirm carry limits with the Jordan Food and Drug Administration.
Documentation
JFDA prior approval is required to import narcotic medicines - carry a prescription.
