Is Memantine legal in Germany?

- Memantine is verschreibungspflichtig (prescription-only) rather than a controlled drug: Memantin is named in Anlage 1 of the Arzneimittelverschreibungsverordnung (AMVV) and is absent from the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BtMG) schedules.
- Consequences if caught
- Memantine is not a Betäubungsmittel, so no BtMG possession or trafficking penalty applies; dispensing this prescription medicine without a valid prescription breaches the AMVV and Arzneimittelgesetz.
- If prescribed or medical
- Prescribed for moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's dementia; obtainable only on a doctor's prescription.
- Documentation
- Memantine tablets (Ebixa, Axura and generics) are pharmacy-dispensed prescription products; carried lawfully with a prescription.
