Legal status
Controlled. ALKALOID controlled: cathinone is on the national narcotics list; the Catha edulis plant is not named. Mechanism: NAMED (alkaloid); plant grey. Capital exposure ABOLISHED: Vietnam removed the death penalty for drug offences effective 1 July 2025 (2025 Penal Code amendment), commuting existing sentences — illegal drug transport/trafficking now caps at life imprisonment.
Consequences if caught
Still a serious, now non-capital, narcotics offence; maximum life imprisonment with no death exposure for khat or any drug.
If prescribed or medical
Khat is traditional plant material with no recognised medical use and no lawful prescription route.
Documentation
No lawful personal-import route; leaf caught via its scheduled cathinone content.
