- Controlled — cathinone (khat's natural principal alkaloid) is a 1971 Convention SCHEDULE I psychotropic and is on List I (hard drugs) of the Opium Act (Opiumwet). Mechanism: 1971 Sch-I transposition, named. As the parent compound it is DISTINCT from the khat PLANT (fresh Catha edulis, separately banned on List II since 2013) and from the synthetic cathinones (mephedrone on List I etc.) that derive from it; cathinone is the named List-I alkaloid, cathine the milder List-II / Schedule-III metabolite.
- Consequences if caught
- Opiumwet List I (hard drugs): possession and dealing offences for the isolated alkaloid carry the heavier Opium Act penalties. No death penalty in the Netherlands.
- If prescribed or medical
- 1971 Schedule I substance with no accepted medical use and no lawful prescription route (not a licensed medicine).
- Documentation
- No licit personal-import route for a List I hard drug; no medical carry exemption for cathinone.
