Is Methylone legal in Netherlands?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Controlled ONLY since 1 Jul 2025 — methylone is caught by the BLANKET 2-phenethylamine/cathinone group ban added to Opiumwet Lijst IA (Art. 3aa); the reform text expressly names methylone among the MDMA analogues now covered. It was NOT individually scheduled and was effectively uncontrolled in the Netherlands before this date, diverging sharply from mephedrone's 2010-era control. No death penalty.
Consequences if caught
Now illegal (since 1 Jul 2025); up to 3 years / €82,000 for a Lijst I substance, heavier for trafficking. Before 1 Jul 2025 it was not a controlled drug in NL.
If prescribed or medical
No recognised medical use; no lawful prescription route.
Documentation
Since 1 Jul 2025 no lawful personal import; previously uncontrolled.
