Is Buprenorphine legal in Iran?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Buprenorphine is a controlled prescription opioid under Iran's narcotic-medicine regime — a 1971 Schedule III drug, a lighter tier than methadone; being thebaine-derived it is not clearly enumerated among the Art. 8 death-eligible substances of the Anti-Narcotics Law, so its capital exposure is left to confirmation (prescribed/personal use is treated as non-capital).
Consequences if caught
Iran's death penalty targets the enumerated substances of Anti-Narcotics Law Arts. 4, 5, 8 and 9 (opium/heroin/morphine/cocaine/methamphetamine, etc.); buprenorphine is not clearly listed, and prescribed/personal use is handled under the medicine/psychotropics regime (imprisonment, fines).
If prescribed or medical
Dispensed as a controlled prescription medicine on Ministry of Health authorisation (buprenorphine is used for opioid substitution in Iran).
Documentation
Carry a prescription and original packaging; obtain any required import authorisation.
