Are Barbiturates legal in Nigeria?

- Legal status
- Barbiturates are psychotropic substances (1971 Convention) under the NDLEA Act (Cap. N30) and NAFDAC control, a prescription-controlled class transposing the 1971 Convention tiers.
- Consequences if caught
- Psychotropic possession/dealing draws fixed terms (~15-25 years); s.11 trafficking up to life. The NDLEA Act carries no death penalty, the old capital drug provision was abolished in 1986/expunged 1989. Barbiturates are not death-eligible.
- If prescribed or medical
- Phenobarbital is dispensed as a controlled antiepileptic (a WHO Essential Medicine); the sedative-hypnotic barbiturates are tightly controlled.
- Documentation
- Carry a prescription and original packaging; declare controlled medicines.
