Is Zolpidem legal in France?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Zolpidem is a prescription hypnotic to which France applies part of the narcotics (stupefiants) prescribing regime: since 10 April 2017 it must be issued on a secure prescription (ordonnance securisee), reflecting its 1971 Convention Schedule IV psychotropic status.
Consequences if caught
Diversion and abuse of zolpidem drove the 2017 tightening; unlawful supply of this listed hypnotic is prosecuted under the Code de la sante publique controlled-medicines provisions.
If prescribed or medical
Zolpidem is prescribed for short-term insomnia, limited to 28 days per prescription and dispensed only on the tamper-resistant secure form with quantities written in full.
Documentation
Patients carry prescribed zolpidem with the secure prescription; unlike full narcotics there is no three-day presentation rule, but a medical certificate is advised for travel.
