Is MXE legal in Portugal?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
MXE (methoxetamine) is controlled throughout the EU, and thus in Portugal, under Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2015/1875 (8 October 2015), which required member states to subject MXE to control measures; Portugal incorporates it into the narcotics/psychotropics regime of Decreto-Lei n.º 15/93.
Consequences if caught
Trafficking and supply of MXE are criminal offences under Decreto-Lei n.º 15/93; personal possession is decriminalised and handled administratively under Lei n.º 30/2000, as with other controlled drugs.
If prescribed or medical
MXE has no authorised medical use in Portugal and cannot be prescribed.
Documentation
No legitimate supply exists; online-ordered MXE is an illicit import subject to customs seizure.
