Is MXE legal in New Zealand?
- Legal status
- MXE (methoxetamine) is captured by New Zealand's blanket regime for novel dissociatives: as an unapproved psychoactive substance it may not be manufactured, imported, supplied or sold under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013, which prohibits all psychoactive products lacking pre-market approval (none has been granted).
- Consequences if caught
- Manufacture, import and supply of MXE as an unapproved psychoactive substance are offences under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013 carrying imprisonment and fines; personal possession of a small amount is not itself an offence under that Act.
- If prescribed or medical
- MXE has no approved medicinal use in New Zealand and cannot be prescribed.
- Documentation
- No approved product exists, so all commercial supply is unlawful; MXE ordered from overseas is an illicit import subject to Customs seizure.
