Is MXE legal in Ireland?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
MXE (methoxetamine) is controlled across the EU, and therefore in Ireland, under Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2015/1875 (8 October 2015), which obliged member states to subject MXE to control and criminal penalties; Ireland brings it within its Misuse of Drugs controlled-substances regime, reinforced by the Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Act 2010 blanket ban on sale of psychoactive substances.
Consequences if caught
Supply and possession of MXE as a controlled/psychoactive substance are criminal offences carrying imprisonment and fines under the Misuse of Drugs Acts and the 2010 psychoactive-substances legislation.
If prescribed or medical
MXE has no authorised medicinal use in Ireland and is not prescribable.
Documentation
No legal retail or pharmacy channel exists; MXE bought online is an illicit import liable to seizure.
