- MXE (methoxetamine) is a controlled narcotic (麻薬) in Japan under the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act; first designated a controlled 'designated substance' (指定薬物) in 2012, it was up-scheduled to a full narcotic in 2016, reflecting its dissociative abuse potential and lack of medical use.
- Consequences if caught
- As a narcotic, MXE possession, use, trafficking and import are criminal offences carrying imprisonment; import in particular is treated severely under Japan's narcotics control regime.
- If prescribed or medical
- MXE has no approved medical or prescription use in Japan.
- Documentation
- There is no lawful supply; carrying or importing MXE (including by post) is prosecutable, with no traveller exemption.
