- Mitragynine, the principal alkaloid of kratom, is a Schedule 9 (Prohibited Substance) entry in the Poisons Standard (SUSMP): kratom, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are all separately named Schedule 9 entries (scheduled since 2005), so the alkaloids are controlled together with the plant.

- Possessing, supplying or manufacturing a Schedule 9 prohibited substance is an offence under state law carrying imprisonment.
- If prescribed or medical
- No lawful medical route — Schedule 9 signifies prohibition, not ordinary prescribing.
- Documentation
- No lawful personal-import route for a Schedule 9 prohibited substance.
