Is Methadone legal in Germany?

- Methadone is listed in Anlage III of the Narcotics Act (BtMG) — a full narcotic requiring a special narcotics prescription (BtM-Rezept).
- Consequences if caught
- Handling or possession without a narcotics prescription: up to 5 years (§29 BtMG); commercial trafficking up to 15 years.
- If prescribed or medical
- Prescribed on a BtM-Rezept for opioid-substitution treatment (legal since 1992; mainly office-based GPs and pharmacies, take-home permitted).
- Documentation
- Within the Schengen area carry the Article 75 CISA certificate authenticated by the state health authority (BfArM guidance).
