Is Buprenorphine legal in Germany?
- Legal status
- Buprenorphine is listed in Anlage III of the Narcotics Act (BtMG) — marketable and prescribable, but in a lighter practical control tier than methadone; substitution prescribing has been legal since 1992.
- Consequences if caught
- Handling buprenorphine without a narcotics prescription is an offence under §29 BtMG (up to 5 years; commercial trafficking higher).
- If prescribed or medical
- Prescribed for opioid substitution mainly by office-based GPs with pharmacy dispensing (take-home permitted), on a narcotics prescription (BtM-Rezept).
- Documentation
- Within the Schengen area carry the Article 75 CISA certificate authenticated by the state health authority (BfArM guidance); for non-Schengen travel confirm requirements in advance.
