Is DXM legal in Turkey?

Legal status

Dextromethorphan is absent from Turkey's closed narcotics list. The dossier ran a completed list search, «Arama kaydı: “dxm” adı, yaygın eş anlamlıları ve kimyasal adı 2313 sayılı Kanun kapsamındaki kararların tamamında arandı; tam kayıt bulunmadı.», the name, common synonyms and chemical name were searched across all the decisions made under Law No. 2313 and no exact entry was found. That verified absence means the narcotics schedule does not reach it, without implying unrestricted legality under other law. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant regulated as a medicine, and its position is worth contrasting with codeine, the other antitussive in this corpus, which is carried in the classification decisions and is reached by the morphine ether limb of article 1 of Law No. 2313. Two ingredients in the same product category therefore sit on opposite sides of the narcotics line.

Consequences if caught

Capital exposure: none. No controlled drug capital, life or quantity rule attaches, because the substance is absent from the closed narcotics list; separate regulatory law may still apply. Articles 188 and 191 of Penal Code No. 5237 do not engage, so neither the thirty year ceiling nor the two to five year use offence applies to dextromethorphan, and there is no quantity of cough syrup that converts into a narcotics charge. Medicines law applies instead, and article 187 of the Penal Code marks its outer edge, setting one to five years and a judicial fine for producing or selling a medicine in a way that endangers the life and health of persons, increased by one third where the offence is committed by a physician or pharmacist or within a profession practised under official permission. That is an adulteration and unsafe supply provision rather than a drug provision.

If prescribed or medical

Dextromethorphan is a medicine and the traveller question is a product question. The dossier carried no prescription instrument for this row, so whether a given preparation is sold over the counter or on prescription in Turkey is for the TİTCK to state and is deferred here, and the position should not be assumed from the country of purchase. Combination products are the practical trap, because a syrup containing dextromethorphan may also contain codeine or an antihistamine, and the codeine limb would bring the product into the narcotics regime on its own row rather than on this one. Check the full ingredient list, not the brand.

Documentation

Carry cough and cold medicines in their original packaging with the ingredient list legible, which is the documentation that matters when a product's status turns on what else is in it. Where a prescription exists, bring it with a prescriber's letter naming the patient, the active ingredient, the dose and the treatment period. Absence from the narcotics list clears dextromethorphan itself and clears nothing else in the bottle.
