Is DXM legal in Sweden?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
CONTROLLED — narcotic. Sweden narcotic-classified dextromethorphan (DXM), adding it to narkotikaförteckning V (substances not under the international conventions but controlled nationally) with effect from 7 July 2008 after abuse-related deaths; no DXM cough product has been marketed in Sweden since about 2000.
Consequences if caught
Unauthorised possession, supply or import of DXM is a narcotics offence (narkotikabrott) under the Narcotic Drugs Punishment Act — fines to imprisonment.
If prescribed or medical
Cough-suppressant status: not available — DXM is a controlled narcotic with no marketed cough medicine; medicinal use would require special authorisation.
Documentation
Travellers cannot buy DXM cough medicine in Sweden, and importing DXM products is treated as a narcotics offence.
