Is DXM legal in Singapore?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Over-the-counter cough medicine, NOT a controlled drug. Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a non-prescription antitussive (regulated as a pharmacy/general-sale therapeutic product and a Poison under the Poisons Act) — it is NOT listed as a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, so it carries no MDA (capital/trafficking) exposure.
Consequences if caught
No Misuse of Drugs Act offence; unlicensed sale or supply of DXM outside the therapeutic-products/poisons framework is an HSA regulatory offence.
If prescribed or medical
Cough-suppressant status: OTC — dispensed without a prescription (pharmacy/general sale).
Documentation
DXM cough medicine is bought over the counter in Singapore without a prescription.
