Is Codeine legal in Qatar?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Codeine is a controlled narcotic under Law No. 9 of 1987 (Narcotic Drugs and Dangerous Psychotropic Substances); low-dose codeine sits below the trafficking tier in practice. Qatari law permits death for drug trafficking on paper, but that capital exposure is reserved for aggravated trafficking, not therapeutic codeine.
Consequences if caught
Aggravated trafficking is death-eligible on paper (most sentences commuted to life); unauthorised possession of codeine draws imprisonment, while prescribed use is lawful.
If prescribed or medical
Dispensed as a controlled prescription medicine.
Documentation
MOPH prior import authorisation is required for controlled/narcotic medicines - carry a prescription, doctor's letter and original packaging (maximum about a 3-month supply).
