- Unlawful supply of this listed hypnotic is prosecuted under the DPR 309/1990 controlled-substances code; possession of a prescribed medicine is not treated as illicit drug possession.

- Zolpidem is prescribed for short-term insomnia (ricetta medica) as a scheduled psychotropic medicine.
- Documentation
- A traveller carries prescribed zolpidem with the prescription; personal-use import for treatment is permitted within the medicine's schedule limits.
