Zolpidem is a Schedule 4 (Prescription Only Medicine) substance in the Poisons Standard (SUSMP), consistent with its 1971 Convention Schedule IV psychotropic status; a boxed warning was added over sleep-related behaviours rather than up-scheduling it to Schedule 8.

Supplying this prescription-only hypnotic without authority is an offence under state/territory poisons and therapeutic-goods laws; a lawfully prescribed personal supply is lawful.

Zolpidem is prescribed short-term for insomnia as a Schedule 4 prescription medicine carrying a boxed warning about sleepwalking and sleep-driving.
