Is Xylazine legal in Japan?

- Xylazine (キシラジン) is regulated in Japan as a veterinary medicine: xylazine injectables are approved animal drugs listed in the MAFF/NVAL veterinary-medicinal-products database and classified as a prescription-direction drug (要指示医薬品) and powerful drug (劇薬); it is not listed under the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
- Consequences if caught
- Supply of xylazine outside veterinary channels is a pharmaceuticals/veterinary-medicines-law matter, not a narcotics-control offence, as it is not a scheduled human controlled drug.
- If prescribed or medical
- Dispensed on a veterinarian's instruction (要指示) for sedation/analgesia in cattle and other animals; xylazine has no authorised human medical use.
- Documentation
- Xylazine products (e.g. キシラジン「第一」, キシラジン注2％「フジタ」) are registered in the MAFF/NVAL animal-drug database.
