Is Pregabalin legal in Saudi Arabia?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Pregabalin is a controlled prescription drug in Saudi Arabia — the SFDA reclassified it as a controlled (Schedule II-type) medicine in December 2017 in response to widespread abuse and trafficking, so it may be dispensed only against a specific prescription with no refills; this abuse-driven control is far stricter than gabapentin's ordinary-prescription status in most countries.
Consequences if caught
Unauthorised import, supply or possession is prosecuted severely; pregabalin is a known drug of abuse and diversion, and undocumented import risks detention.
If prescribed or medical
Dispensed as a controlled medicine on a specific prescription with a clear indication and no permitted refills.
Documentation
A prescription alone may be insufficient — obtain SFDA e-clearance where required and carry a doctor's letter with original packaging and a personal quantity only.
