- Pregabalin is a Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) medicine under the Poisons Standard (SUSMP), the status it has held since its 2005 registration; despite TGA boxed warnings on abuse and dependence added in 2021, it was NOT moved to Schedule 8, so it remains a prescription-only rather than a controlled drug — the same S4 status as gabapentin.
- Consequences if caught
- Possessing a Schedule 4 medicine without a prescription is an offence under state law; it does not carry the controlled-drug (S8) penalties.
- If prescribed or medical
- Prescribed as a Schedule 4 prescription-only medicine.
- Documentation
- The Traveller's Exemption allows roughly a 3-month supply carried with a prescription or doctor's letter, in original packaging.
