- Mitragynine, the principal alkaloid of kratom, was classified as a health-hazardous substance/narcotic by Lakemedelsverket in 2011, effectively banning kratom: the named alkaloid is controlled together with the plant, which is caught as its natural source (no separate isolate carve-out).
- Consequences if caught
- Handling a narcotic draws up to 3 years (up to 7 for a serious offence); a minor offence draws a fine or up to 6 months.
- If prescribed or medical
- No lawful medical route — kratom and its alkaloids are not used in Swedish healthcare.
- Documentation
- No lawful personal-import route for a controlled narcotic not in medical use.
