Is Mitragynine legal in Taiwan?

- Mitragynine, the principal alkaloid of kratom, is controlled together with the plant in Taiwan: Mitragyna speciosa (kratom) is a Schedule 3 (Category 3) controlled drug under the Controlled Drugs Act, with mitragynine named directly in the schedule alongside the plant — controlled together, not a separately-treated isolate. The death penalty (Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act Art. 4) applies only to Category 1, so Category 3 kratom alkaloids are not death-eligible.
- Consequences if caught
- Category 3 possession draws an administrative fine and drug education; possession-with-intent or sale draws roughly 3–10 years.
- If prescribed or medical
- No ordinary prescription route as a consumer product — a licence is required to import/export a controlled drug.
- Documentation
- No lawful personal-import route without a controlled-drug licence.
