Is Memantine legal in Portugal?
- Legal status
- Memantine is an authorised prescription medicine (medicamento sujeito a receita medica), not a controlled substance: Infarmed granted it an Autorizacao de Introducao no Mercado and it is not listed in the Decreto-Lei 15/93 narcotics/psychotropics tables.
- Consequences if caught
- No controlled-drug penalty attaches to memantine; unauthorised supply of a prescription medicine is a medicines-law matter, not a trafficking offence.
- If prescribed or medical
- Prescribed for moderately-severe to severe Alzheimer's dementia.
- Documentation
- Ebixa (memantine, Lundbeck) and generics are registered in the Infarmed Infomed database; carried lawfully with a prescription.
