Is Gabapentin legal in France?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Gabapentin (Neurontin et generiques) is an ordinary prescription medicine (liste I), not a stupefiant: it holds ANSM marketing authorisation and, unlike pregabalin, was deliberately left off the secure-prescription regime. When ANSM imposed ordonnance securisee and a 6-month limit on pregabalin (Lyrica) from 24 May 2021 over abuse, it expressly did not extend those controls to gabapentin, whose abuse potential it judged lower.
Consequences if caught
Gabapentin carries no stupefiants penalty; supply outside the pharmacy prescription circuit is a medicines-regulation breach rather than a narcotics offence.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed on an ordinary liste I prescription for epilepsy and neuropathic pain, without the secure-prescription and 6-month restrictions that apply to pregabalin.
Documentation
Neurontin and gabapentin generics appear in the ANSM public medicines database; travellers carry them with a prescription.
