Is Etizolam legal in China?

- Etizolam is a controlled Class II psychotropic in China — reclassified as a pharmaceutical psychotropic by NMPA/MPS/NHC Announcement 55 of 2025 (effective July 2025), after being placed on the NPS catalogue in March 2021; it is prescription-only.
- Consequences if caught
- Unauthorised possession or use is handled administratively; supply is prosecuted under Criminal Law Art. 347 (graduated by quantity). Art. 347 can in theory reach the death penalty for large-quantity trafficking of psychotropics, but there is no established capital threshold for Class II psychotropics such as etizolam, and it is not applied to them in practice.

- Declare controlled medicines; unlicensed import is treated as smuggling.
