Is Ephedrine legal in Spain?
- Legal status
- Regulated as a chemical PRECURSOR (1988 UN Convention Table I — a methamphetamine precursor), NOT as a scheduled narcotic; pure ephedrine is a Category 1 scheduled substance under Ley 3/1996 (AEMPS); NOT an estupefaciente/psicótropo. Also a medicine.
- Consequences if caught
- Illegal diversion/trafficking of the controlled precursor is prosecuted under Código Penal art. 371 — a precursor offence separate from the narcotics-trafficking articles.
- If prescribed or medical
- Also a pharmacy/prescription decongestant-bronchodilator medicine subject to sales limits; carry documentation for a personal supply.
- Documentation
- Carry the prescription and, for controlled medicines, a Schengen certificate; keep medicines in original packaging.
Drug laws and enforcement change and vary within a country. This is not legal advice. Always confirm with Spain’s embassy or official drug authority before traveling; penalties can be severe, including imprisonment.

Non-U.S. travelers: check your own government’s travel advisory and embassy.
If you’re detained or arrested abroad
