Is DXM legal in Netherlands?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Over-the-counter but pharmacy-only medicine (UA — Uitsluitend Apotheek) under the Geneesmiddelenwet — NOT listed on the Opium Act (not scheduled). The CBG reclassified dextromethorphan (DXM) from drugstore-available (UAD) to pharmacy-only (UA) from 1 March 2009 over misuse concerns.
Consequences if caught
No Opiumwet offence; DXM is sold only in pharmacies, and supply through drugstores or general retail is a medicines-law breach.
If prescribed or medical
Cough-suppressant status: OTC but pharmacy-only (UA) — no prescription, but sold only in pharmacies, not in drogisterijen.
Documentation
DXM cough medicine is bought at a Dutch pharmacy without a prescription; it is no longer sold in drugstores.
