Is MXE legal in Netherlands?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
MXE (methoxetamine) is controlled throughout the EU, and thus in the Netherlands, under Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2015/1875 (8 October 2015), which required member states to subject MXE to control measures and criminal penalties within their national drugs law (the Opium Act framework).
Consequences if caught
Production, trafficking and dealing MXE are offences under the Opiumwet carrying imprisonment and fines; enforcement against small personal amounts is typically low-priority but the substance remains illegal to supply.
If prescribed or medical
MXE is not an authorised medicine (unlike ketamine, a UR prescription medicine) and cannot be prescribed or dispensed in the Netherlands.
Documentation
No legitimate supply exists; MXE ordered online is an illicit import subject to customs interception.
