Is Crack Cocaine legal in Italy?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Crack is the freebase (base) form of cocaine and has no separate legal identity in Italy: it is controlled AS cocaine, a 'heavy' drug in the Tabelle of Presidential Decree DPR 309/1990, whose entry covers cocaine, its salts and preparations and so reaches the base/freebase form. Crack is treated identically to cocaine.
Consequences if caught
Personal possession of crack (as cocaine) is an administrative offence (Art 75, licence/document sanctions); trafficking is a crime under Art 73 (6-20 years).
If prescribed or medical
Cocaine has narrow controlled medical use; the crack/freebase base has no pharmaceutical form and is not prescribable.
Documentation
No medicinal documentation exists for crack/freebase cocaine.
