Is Crack Cocaine legal in Australia?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Crack is the freebase (base) form of cocaine and has no separate legal identity in Australia: it is controlled AS cocaine, a prohibited/controlled drug under the Commonwealth Poisons Standard and state drug laws, whose cocaine entry covers the substance, its salts and derivatives and so reaches the base/freebase form. Importation of crack is an offence in identical terms to cocaine.
Consequences if caught
Importation of crack (as cocaine) is a serious Commonwealth offence (up to life for commercial quantities); state possession and supply offences carry imprisonment and fines.
If prescribed or medical
Cocaine hydrochloride has narrow authorised medical use as a topical anaesthetic (Schedule 8); the crack/freebase base has no medicinal form and cannot be prescribed.
Documentation
No prescription documentation exists for crack/freebase cocaine.
