Is Cathinone legal in Thailand?

- Controlled — cathinone (khat's natural principal alkaloid) is a 1971 Convention SCHEDULE I psychotropic and is a Category 1 psychotropic substance under the Narcotics Code (consolidated 2021). Mechanism: 1971 Sch-I transposition, named. As the parent compound it is DISTINCT from the khat PLANT (Catha edulis leaf, which the Thai FDA states is not itself scheduled) and from the synthetic cathinones (mephedrone etc., separately scheduled) that derive from it; cathinone is the named Category-1 alkaloid, cathine the milder Category-2 / Schedule-III metabolite. Thailand retains the death penalty, but cathinone is not a capital-threshold drug and carries no realistic capital exposure.
- Consequences if caught
- Category 1 psychotropic: possession and supply of the isolated alkaloid are serious narcotics offences, but well below any capital tier.
- If prescribed or medical
- 1971 Schedule I / Category-1 substance with no accepted medical use and no lawful prescription route for the isolated alkaloid.
- Documentation
- No licit personal-import route for a Category-1 psychotropic.
