Is Khat legal in Thailand?

Cathinone is a Category 1 psychotropic substance and cathine a Category 2 under the Narcotics Code (consolidated 2021); the Thai FDA states the Catha edulis plant itself is not scheduled, only the extracted alkaloids. Mechanism: NAMED (alkaloids); plant grey. Thailand retains the death penalty but khat leaf sits far below any capital threshold — no realistic capital exposure.

- Importing khat is treated as a narcotics offence because the leaf contains Category-1 cathinone (customs has seized imported leaf); serious but well below any capital tier.
- If prescribed or medical
- Khat is traditional plant material with no recognised medical use and no lawful prescription route.
- Documentation
- No lawful personal-import route; fresh leaf contains a Category-1 psychotropic and is seized on import.
