Is Benzodiazepines legal in Qatar?
- Legal status
- Benzodiazepines are a pharmacological family whose members are placed individually rather than as a group, so Law No. 9 of 1987 assigns no single schedule placement under that name. Article 1 of Law No. 9 of 1987 provides «تعتبر مواد مخدرة أو مؤثرات عقلية خطرة في تطبيق أحكام هذا القانون المواد والمؤثرات العقلية المبينة في الجدولين رقمي (1) و(2) الملحقين به», which makes the narcotic drugs and dangerous psychotropic substances for this Law those set out in attached Tables 1 and 2. A single yes or no would collapse materials the tables treat differently. Benzodiazepines are a multi-substance class, and Qatar does not place the class as such in Law 9's closed tables.
- Consequences if caught
- No offence follows from the name by itself, and a proved constituent carries the whole of the exposure. Articles 34 and 35 reach the listed trafficking and commercial conduct at no stated quantity at all. Article 34 reads «يعاقب بالإعدام أو الحبس المؤبد», punished by death or life imprisonment, and the word or is what makes death discretionary at the base tier. The same article then provides «وتكون العقوبة الإعدام... في حالة العود», the punishment shall be death in the case of recidivism, and uses that same mandatory form for its public-official and under-eighteen aggravations. Article 35 sets ten to twenty years for commercial possession, acquisition, delivery and administration, with life mandatory on its own recidivism and aggravation limbs. Article 37 sets six months to three years and a fine for personal use, lets the court order treatment instead for a proved addict within statutory limits, and article 38 bars prosecution altogether for a user who presents voluntarily for treatment.
- If prescribed or medical
- No single prescription answer attaches to the name. Where a constituent is a scheduled medicine in its own right, that constituent's authorisation and dispensing rules apply, and a pharmacy label is never by itself a Law 9 schedule placement.
- Documentation
- Carry nothing on the strength of the category name, because the category is not what the tables read. Identify the constituent actually present and carry its prescription and dispensing label if it has one. Qatar was checked on 18 September 2026.
