Legal status
Barbiturates are List II psychotropics under the Opium Act (Opiumwet) — the lower control tier transposing the 1971 Convention — and are also regulated as medicines under the Geneesmiddelenwet.
Consequences if caught
Possession can carry up to ~2 years and dealing up to 6 years; a personal amount is low enforcement priority.
If prescribed or medical
Phenobarbital is prescribed as a List II antiepileptic medicine (a WHO Essential Medicine); the sedative-hypnotic barbiturates are rarely used.
Documentation
Carry the Schengen Article 75 certificate and prescription, in original packaging, roughly a ≤3-month supply.
