Is Tramadol legal in Thailand?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Tramadol is a controlled medicine in Thailand — oral tramadol was reclassified as a 'Specially Controlled Drug' (announced 14 July 2025, in force within 180 days) with quantity caps, having previously been a pharmacist-restricted dangerous drug; Thailand retains the death penalty for the most serious narcotics offences, but no tramadol-specific capital tier is established.
Consequences if caught
Dispensing or possessing tramadol outside the specially-controlled limits is an offence; personal possession and use are not death-eligible.
If prescribed or medical
Dispensed as a Specially Controlled Drug under strict quantity limits.
Documentation
Carry only a personal supply with a prescription or doctor's letter and declare it; confirm whether an FDA import permit is required.
